What to Bring Checklist

• Life Jackets & PFDs: Provided on board, but bring well-fitting jackets for young children or pets.

• Sun Protection: Reef-safe sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and UV-blocking hats or rash guards.

• Weather Layers: Windbreakers or extra clothing for shifting afternoon offshore breezes.

• Hydration & Snacks: Plenty of fresh drinking water, non-glass beverage containers, and easy-to-pack meals.

• Documentation: Government-issued photo ID and any state-required boating safety cards.

Pre-Charter Safety Walkthrough

Before shoving off, your captain or host will conduct a brief safety orientation covering:

1. Life Jacket Locations: Where personal flotation devices (PFDs) are stowed and who must wear them under state/federal laws.

2. Emergency Equipment: Locations of fire extinguishers, sound-signaling devices, first-aid kits, and flares.

3. Overboard & Swimming Safety: Safe procedures for entering/exiting the water, swimming near propellors, and emergency man-overboard drills.

4. Onboard Communications: Overview of VHF radio operation, bilge pumps, and emergency engine shut-off switches (kill switches).

What are the basics of boating safety?

Always check weather conditions before departing, designate a sober operator if you are bareboat renting, wear life jackets when instructed, and listen carefully to your captain’s directions at all times.

How do I prepare for a self-operated (bareboat) rental?

• Certifications: Ensure you hold the required State Boating Safety License or Boater Education Card.

• Pre-Rental Walkthrough: Inspect the hull, fuel levels, anchor lines, and safety gear alongside the boat owner before departing.

• Local Navigation: Ask the owner about local waterway hazards, speed zones, shallow sandbars, and tide schedules.

• Insurance Verification: Confirm that the owner provides commercial peer-to-peer rental insurance coverage.

Compliance & Operational Standards

Coast Guard & Local Regulations

Boat owners and captains are required to comply with all U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations, state boating laws, and local port authority rules.

• Captained Charters: Captains carrying passengers for hire must hold a valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (e.g., 6-Pack OUPV or Master License).

• Vessel Safety Checks: All boats listed on Fun Boat Rental must maintain mandatory Coast Guard safety gear, including USCG-approved PFDs, throwable devices, sound signals, and fire extinguishers.

• Charter Classification: Bareboat rentals must comply with federal statutory requirements regarding passenger limits, rental agreements, and crew selection.

Owner & Captain FAQ

Do I need a Captain’s License to list my boat?

If you are operating a charter carrying passengers for hire, yes.

• Bareboat Charter / Captains license is required: allows you to rent your boat and carry up to 12 passengers as long as a licensed Captain (other than yourself) operates the boat under a Bareboat Charter Agreement. 

• Operator / 6-Pack License (OUPV): Allows you to carry up to 6 paying passengers on uninspected vessels up to 100 gross tons.

• Master License: Required for operating USCG-inspected vessels carrying 7 or more paying passengers.

How does Fun Boat Rental handle damages and incidents?

Fun Boat Rental requires owners to maintain primary commercial marine insurance covering rental operations.

• Pre & Post-Rental Inspections: Always document the boat’s condition with photos and time-stamped checklists before and after every rental.

• Security Allowance: Owners can set a security allowance hold to cover minor incidental damages, fuel discrepancies, or late returns.
